Solar Thin Films Inc. (STF), Budapest, Hungary, has signed a three-year research and development (R&D) agreement with Renewable Energy Solutions Inc. (RESI), a Ewing, N.J.-based developer of photovoltaic (PV) technology and applications, to produce manufacturing equipment for thin film PV modules.

According to the companies, the manufacturing equipment will be used to produce copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS)-based thin film PV modules in response to a shortage of electronic-grade silicon used in the crystalline silicon PV modules.

‘With this R&D contract with RESI, STF plans to introduce module manufacturing equipment to produce the next generation that will be more efficient and lower-cost thin film CIGS-based PV modules on a glass substrate,’ says Csaba Toro, STF's chief executive officer.

The companies' goal is to have the manufacturing equipment offered for sale during the 2007 fiscal year.
