California School District Expects To Save Millions With Solar Deal

The Escondido Union High School District (EUHSD) and SunPower Corp. have announced a power purchase agreement (PPA) under which SunPower will build 2 MW of solar power systems at four district schools.

Located in Escondido, Calif., the district estimates that the agreement will offset approximately 75% of its annual electricity demand and save $13.4 million in electricity costs over the next 20 years.

Michael Simonson, EUHSD’s assistant superintendent of business services, says the district will “apply the savings where they are needed, such as for enhanced academic programs or facility upgrades.” He adds, “We are proud to support the development of additional solar power resources in our community.”

At the four district sites, SunPower will install solar carport systems using its own solar panels, and the systems are expected to be operational by the end of this year.
