California Solar Initiative Reaches 1 GW Of Consumer-Installed Power

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) says the California Solar Initiative (CSI) has reached a milestone of 1 GW of installed power. The CSI program has a budget of $2.4 billion over 10 years, and a goal of reaching 1,940 MW of installed power by the end of 2016.

At the end of 2012, the CSI program had installed 1,066 MW in its general market and affordable housing photovoltaic programs, helping to reach 55% of the 1,940 MW goal, with an additional 332 MW (17% of total goal) in pending projects.

In most parts of the state, the rebates are up to 92% lower than they were at the start of the program in 2007, but participation in the program continues to increase year over year, the CPUC notes.

The CSI was initially feared to run out as early as last year in certain areas, but a change to the way the funding allocations are measured will allow it to continue in all utility territories for at least a short additional time.
