REC Reduces Additional Wafer Production Capacity

Renewable Energy Corp. ASA (REC) says it will stop 50% of production capacity at its 300 MW monocrystalline wafer facility in Glomfjord, Norway, throughout the first quarter of this year.

The temporary shutdown, which is designed to address ‘a continued weak spot market for wafers,’ is expected to affect approximately 65 employees, according to REC.

On Nov. 29, 2011, REC announced the temporary halt of 60% of the production at the 650 MW multicrystalline wafer facility in Heroya, Norway. After these adjustments, REC expects to produce approximately 105 MW of multi- and monocrystalline wafers in Norway in the first quarter of this year.

The company's integrated wafer, cell and module facility in Singapore (700 MW annual wafer to module capacity) and polysilicon facilities in the U.S. (19,000 metric tons of annual polysilicon capacity) continue to operate at full capacity, the company notes.
