Following months of unconfirmed reports, Apple has publicly commented on its plans to construct a large PV array at a new data center in Maiden, N.C.

‘Our goal is to run the Maiden facility with a high-percentage renewable energy mix, and we have major projects under way to achieve this – including building the nation's largest end-user-owned solar array and building the largest non-utility fuel cell installation in the United States,’ the company writes in a new environmental report.

When completed, the 100-acre, 20 MW project is expected to supply 42 GWh of energy annually.

The data center has also earned LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, Apple adds. Information on construction partners and equipment selections for the solar array has yet to be be released.
