Applied Materials Inc., a Santa Clara, Calif.-based provider of solar photovoltaic products, has named Winfried Hoffmann chief technology officer (CTO) of its solar business group and a member of the management board of Applied Materials GmbH.

In his new role, Hoffmann will manage technology development in the U.S., Europe and Asia from the company’s Alzenau, Germany, facilities. He brings nearly 30 years of industry experience to the positions. In addition, Hoffmann will continue to serve as president of the European Photovoltaic Industry Association and a member of the German Solar Industry Association.
