Abound Solar Halting Module Production Before Switch To New Modules

0

Abound Solar, a manufacturer of thin-film cadmium telluride photovoltaic modules, plans to cease production of its first-generation solar module, resulting in the elimination of approximately 180 permanent jobs at its Colorado facilities.

According to the company, the shutdown will be implemented in order to ‘accelerate the manufacturing process and equipment changes needed’ for the launch of its second-generation module. Once manufacturing equipment has been modified and performance tested, Abound Solar expects to resume mass production with the module by the end of 2012.

The new module – AB2 – boasts 85 W output and 12.5% efficiency, as verified by the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Abound says.Â
