Shaner Industries, a Pittsburgh-based company that specializes in the design, engineering and installation of steel foundations, has completed the installation of 125 custom-designed steel foundations to support SolFocus' concentrated PV (CPV) solar systems at five schools in Los Angeles County, Calif.

All construction projects on or near active school properties pose unique challenges, Shaner Industries says. The education process must continue with minimal disruption, and thousands of children are exposed to the construction site daily – causing serious safety concerns. Excavating a site to prepare for concrete requires holes to be dug, rebar to be placed, forms to be created and many more procedures that add days or weeks to a project's timeline.

Compared to concrete foundations, steel foundations can be installed faster and more safely, according to Shaner Industries.
