Solar Power Comes To the Emmy Awards

Joan and Melissa Rivers may be busy on the red carpet for Sunday's Emmy Awards, but a solar panel canopy will be busy providing electric power for the star-studded walk of fame.

A UNI-SOLAR 12.5 kW solar photovoltaic system provided by United Solar Ovonic has been installed to supplement the power for the red carpet area outside of the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The panel features laminates installed on 2,700 square feet of slate blue standing seam metal roofing manufactured by Englert Inc. to form a sun canopy located over the red carpet grandstand. The solar system will be tied into the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power utility grid.

After the Emmy Awards ceremony is over, the solar panel will be donated to a middle school in Chatsworth, Calif.
