A church in Arlington, Va., says it is “thinking globally while acting locally” by installing a new solar project.
Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church has welcomed a 95 kW rooftop solar array installed by local company Ipsun Solar. The project, comprising 319 panels, also features a blue, cross-shaped design.
According to Ipsun Solar, the project represents the largest solar array at a place of worship in Arlington County. The project will supply about 48% of the power for the church’s buildings.
“We wanted to try to get as much energy as we can from a renewable source,” comments Luc Dewulf, an active parishioner and spokesperson for the church.
The initiative was prompted partly by Pope Francis’ encyclical on the climate and environmental crisis, Laudato Si, as well as by a recent report from the U.N. stating that the world’s economies must dramatically accelerate their pollution cuts in order to meet 2015 Paris Accord targets.
