NREL Selects Tau Science Corp. For QE Research

0

Tau Science Corp., a provider of inline and laboratory process control equipment for photovoltaic solar manufacturers, has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to license and commercialize an LED-based quantum efficiency (QE) concept invented by NREL researchers.

QE is a fundamental technique used to characterize solar cell conversion efficiency as a function of wavelength, the company explains. The licensed technology increases measurement speed a hundredfold over conventional systems, enabling, for the first time, its use inline for process and quality control, according to Tau Science.

In a laboratory configuration, the system helps researchers quickly characterize cells to fine-tune their process design. In manufacturing configuration, it measures every cell on the line to detect subtle process drifts that affect cell performance.

The project will be partially funded by NREL's Technology Commercialization and Deployment Fund, which was created by the DOE to accelerate the commercialization of laboratory technologies.
