SMA Solar Technology AG Plans New Factory In South Africa

Despite the company reporting a sharp decline in sales in the first quarter of this year and possible job losses, SMA Solar Technology AG has announced it will set up a Sunny Central inverter production facility in South Africa.

The company says its goal is to serve a growing market and meet the local-content requirements in South Africa. An SMA spokesperson tells Solar Industry, ‘Our planned workforce adjustment has nothing to do with this whatsoever.’

SMA says preparations for constructing the plant in South Africa are under way and will mirror existing inverter production lines in Germany and North America. The company spokesperson says the facility would be able to produce multiple inverter models and be able to ramp up and scale down according to market demands.

"South Africa has strategic importance for SMA," says SMA CEO Pierre-Pascal Urbon." With the opening of our sales and service office in Centurion last year, we have successfully launched in the rapidly growing South African market. The planned production for central inverters enables us to meet the local-content requirements and thus to profit from the expected future growth of the South African market."
