Toshiba Adds To 650 V
SiC Power Devices
Toshiba America Electronic Components Inc. has extended its family of 650V silicon carbide (SiC) Schottky barrier diodes (SBDs). The TRS6E65C, TRS8E65C and TRS10E65C are 6, 8 and 10 A devices, respectively.
Toshiba says low forward voltage drop and fast switching make SBDs well-suited to power conditioners for photovoltaic power generation systems, solar inverters, uninterruptible power supplies and DC-DC converters.
Toshiba’s SBD range features a maximum reverse recovery current of 90 microamperes at 650 V. All devices are housed in TO-220 packages, with additional packages forthcoming.

Fronius Offers Galvo
Inverter For U.S.
Fronius USA has introduced its Galvo string inverter for the U.S. market. The system is intended as a residential solar inverter and incorporates Wi-Fi capabilities for performance monitoring through the Fronius SolarWeb monitoring portal and smartphone apps.
Fronius says the Galvo ships with embedded grid features that will meet evolving standards. The system supports various functions for controlling real and reactive power. Voltage and frequency-dependent power manipulation in periods of grid overload will prevent the inverter from switching off, relieving stress on the grid and regulating inverter energy yield. Modbus control of these functions enables integration into utility communications systems.
Installation and safety features include the SnapINverter hinged mounting system and integrated DC disconnect that locks the inverter to the mounting bracket during operation to avoid removal of the inverter under load.

Moxa Unveils Remote
Plant Monitoring
California-based Moxa has unveiled its UC-8100 Series computer and software platform intended to enable systems providers to offer a monitoring service for any remote field devices.
The UC-8100 series data loggers have two LAN ports and up to two serial ports to connect to inverters, string combiners, smart meters and other devices and then transmit that data over Ethernet, Wi-Fi or cellular connections. The most powerful model will feature a 1 GHz CPU and a micro SD slot for additional data storage. Moxa says the systems work with equipment made by any manufacturer.
The software platform - provisionally named MXcloud - collects data from multiple data loggers at multiple locations, and allows systems providers to manage each data logger and attached device remotely.
Both the UC-8100 Series computer and the MXcloud software package are scheduled for release in early 2014.

Terrajoule Raises $11.5M
For Solar Storage
California-based Terrajoule has raised $11.5 million in venture capital to develop its parabolic trough-based energy storage technology. Investors include New Enterprise Associates, Air Liquide Investments and a number of individuals.
Terrajoule’s energy storage technology uses trough collectors to heat pressurized saltwater. Energy conversion is via reciprocating steam-piston engines. The company says the system can respond rapidly to changes in load, functioning much like the diesel generators it aims to replace.
Terrajoule says it is targeting a number of applications in the industrial and agricultural sectors, including distributed electricity production and waste heat recovery.
