GE Energy Financial Services Completes Investment In Catalina Solar
GE Energy Financial Services, in partnership with Citi, Union Bank NA and Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., has completed an equity investment in EDF Renewable Energy’s 143 MW Catalina Solar plant in California’s Mojave Desert.
Located on 900 acres of private land southwest of the Tehachapi and Piute mountains, Catalina Solar incorporates over 1.1 million thin-film solar photovoltaic modules - 82 MW from Solar Frontier and 61 MW from First Solar. The plant was designed and built by Bechtel. EDF Renewable Services is providing the long-term operations and maintenance services for the project.
A 7.2-mile transmission line connects the facility to the substation. The project’s electricity is provided to San Diego Gas & Electric Co. under a 25-year power purchase agreement.
The investment group initially acquired a minority ownership stake in the project in late 2012. Following the launch of commercial operations in August 2013, the group purchased the remaining stake and converted the entire structure to a single investor lease. EDF Renewable Services is providing long-term operations and maintenance for the project. Financial details of the transactions were not disclosed. R

Xtreme Power Starts
Hawaii Solar Storage
Xtreme Power is installing an energy storage and management system for a 12 MW solar farm under development for the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) in Hawaii. Xtreme Power says the installation will include its RAMP Series energy storage system (ESS).
The cooperative broke ground on the solar facility in November. SolarCity is building the system, which will include 45,000 solar panels. It is scheduled to be complete in May. The cooperative says that the $40 million project is expected to supply 5% of the island’s power and be the largest solar plant in Hawaii. KIUC says it financed the project through the National Rural Utilities Cooperative Finance Corp., which is also a cooperative.
According to Xtreme Power, the 2 MW (500 kWh) RAMP Series ESS will provide ramp rate control and fast frequency response for the KIUC solar facility, enabling its integration into the electric grid. The company says the system will join an existing 1.5 MW Xtreme Power storage unit at KIUC’s Koloa substation.
