Abengoa Receives DOE Award For Power Tower Research

Abengoa Solar has been awarded a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) contract for developing a power tower together with the DOE. The project will involve designing a solar power tower technology plant with a central receiver and storage system.

The system will be made up of a circular field of heliostats that will reflect solar radiation onto a central receiver where the heat will be concentrated. A portion of this heat will be used directly to generate steam, producing electricity inside the turbine, while the other part will be stored to be utilized for producing electricity whenever it is needed, the company adds.

According to Abengoa, the contract totals $10.6 million and marks the sixth partnership between the DOE and Abengoa.
