Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle has signed into law a bill requiring all new single-family residences built in Hawaii to feature solar water-heating systems. The new law prohibits issuing building permits for single-family homes that do not have solar water heaters.
The bill – introduced by Sen. Gary Hooser, D-Kauai, Niihau – passed the Hawaii State Legislature in May. With the governor's signature, the policy will take effect in 2010.
