Home furnishings retailer IKEA has plugged in two solar installations in Illinois, making the company the state's largest solar owner, according to IKEA.

The solar energy systems were installed at the company's two Chicago-area stores, in Bolingbrook and Schaumburg, Ill. The two projects, which comprise 8,463 solar panels, represent a cumulative capacity of 1.989 MW and cover 248,700 square feet.

For the development, design and installation of these two stores' customized solar power systems, IKEA contracted with Chicago-based SoCore Energy.

These installations bring the total number of solar energy projects completed by IKEA in the U.S. to 25, and the company has 14 more installations under way.
