First Solar Inc. says it has now produced 1 GW of its solar modules since beginning commercial production in early 2002.
The company took more than six years to produce its first 500 MW and eight months to produce its next 500 MW. By the end of this year, First Solar expects to have the capacity to produce more than 1 GW per year, the equivalent of an average-sized nuclear power plant.
‘This volume allows us to rapidly reduce manufacturing costs, thereby furthering our mission of making solar power an affordable alternative to conventional energy sources,’ says Bruce Sohn, president of First Solar. ‘We appreciate the many contributions our associates have made in reaching this 1 GW milestone and are grateful for all their hard work.’
