A pair of Ohio National Guard bases has received $7.1 million in federal funding for the installation of solar panels and wind turbines.
According to the Toledo Blade, the Ohio Air National Guard's 180th Fighter Wing at Toledo Express Airport will install a ground-mounted photovoltaic array for the direct conversion of solar energy into electricity. The base is no stranger to this energy source, as 20% of its streetlights are solar powered. The 180th will receive $5.1 million of the federal funds for the new project.
Also receiving new installations is the 200th Red Horse Squadron at Camp Perry, located near Port Clinton on Lake Erie. The Toledo Blade reports the base is planning to install a 600 kW wind turbine and a back-up solar power system. The 200th will receive the remaining $2 million of the federal funds.
The University of Toledo's Wright Center for Photovoltaics Innovation and Commercialization will be involved in the research and implementation of the new systems at both bases.
