Sharp Corp. has announced plans to build a plant for the mass production of thin-film solar cells in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, Japan. Construction is slated to start in November, with production operations scheduled to start by March 2010.

The new plant is designed to produce around 1,000 MW of thin-film solar cells annually. Sharp Corp. states the fully-operational facility will be the largest solar cell plant in the world.

Sharp also plans to use the facility for the production of LCD panels for large-screen televisions. The LCD panel production will run simultaneously with the solar cell output.
