SunEdison, a subsidiary of MEMC Electronic Materials, has activated eight photovoltaic power systems totaling 1.1 MW of solar capacity at Francis Scott Key Middle School in Silver Spring, Md.
The solar power systems were made possible through a solar power purchase agreement that requires no up-front costs from the school district. SunEdison constructed, owns, operates and maintains these systems hosted by the school district. In return, the school system will purchase the energy produced to offset their demand from the grid at or below retail rates for 20 years.
Combined, the eight systems will produce over 1.3 million kWh annually and over 25 million kWh over the first 20 years of operation, according to SunEdison.
