Canadian Solar Thrives In Japanese Market

Canadian Solar's shipments of solar modules to Japan represented the brightest spot in its financial results reported for the first quarter of this year.

According to the company, solar module shipments to Japan were up 75.9% from the fourth quarter of 2012, representing 24.5% of its total shipments. Canadian Solar's total solar module shipments in the first quarter were 340 MW, compared to 404 MW in the fourth quarter of 2012 and 343 MW in the first quarter of 2012.

The report goes on to detail that the company's utility-scale solar power project pipeline for Japan is approximately 125 MW, including about 50 MW of projects it developed itself and about 75 MW of projects developed with partners or through acquisitions. In addition, Canadian Solar Chairman and CEO Shawn Qu cites the company's profitable and growing residential solar system kits business in Japan as important to the company's strategy of transforming from a module supplier to a solutions provider.
