Bright Plain Renewable Energy LLC (BPRE) and SunPower have inaugurated the 5 MW Kalaeloa solar project in West Oahu, Hawaii.
The installation will be managed by BPRE. SunPower designed and built the project, installing its T0 tracker equipment at the 36-acre site. The project was acquired in November 2012 by an affiliate of D. E. Shaw Renewable Investments LLC in partnership with BPRE.
Located on land leased from the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, the solar farm is the first utility-scale solar project on state land, according to the companies.
Hawaiian Electric will buy the power produced by the solar farm under a fixed-price contract for 20 years.
