Applied Materials Inc., a Santa Clara, Calif.-based manufacturer of solar products, has agreed to purchase 8.2 million kWh of renewable energy per year from wind and solar generation sources in California.
Quadrupling an earlier agreement, Applied Materials' pledge is the largest to date in the Santa Clara Green Power program, a 100% renewable energy program sponsored by Silicon Valley Power, Santa Clara's municipal electric utility. According to the company, the purchase represents approximately 12% of the energy used in its Santa Clara facilities, thus preventing the annual release of more than 3,736 metric tons of carbon dioxide.
