Australian Government Cuts Residential Solar Hot Water Rebate

The Australian Solar Energy Society (AuSES) has called on the Australian government to reinstate the AU$1,000 solar hot water rebate for households, which was abruptly cut this week. According to AuSES, more than 1 million Australians have solar water heater systems installed.

AuSES Chief Executive John Grimes called the solar thermal program ‘one of the most successful clean energy programs introduced in recent years.’

‘The disastrous solar policy rollercoaster continues,’ Grimes said. ‘Another solar scheme shut down without notice, more solar jobs lost. That's bad policy and bad process.’

The government's actions put more than 1,000 solar jobs at risk, Grimes added. Solar hot water firm Rheem, for instance, has indicated that the industry could immediately be cut in half as a result of the rebate's removal.
