CaliSolar Expands Solar Cell Production, Boosts Efficiency

After demonstrating a successful pilot production, Sunnyvale, Calif.-based silicon solar cell start-up CaliSolar plans to greatly increase its production capacity. The company says it has produced commercial silicon (Si) cells exceeding 16.4% efficiency.

CaliSolar is currently ramping up manufacturing at its new 60 MW line and expects to reach full production early next year, says Dr. Kamel Ounadjela, president and chief operating officer.

CaliSolar technology, based on research by Eicke Weber at the University of California-Berkeley, uses inexpensive upgraded metallurgical-grade Si feedstock. According to the company, the proprietary process has been continuously improved over the last three years to demonstrate indistinguishable electrical properties versus standard cells.
