Safeway Inc. has unveiled its first solar powered grocery store in Dublin, Calif. The 55,000 square-foot Safeway unit now features an acre-wide rooftop solar array that will provide the store's electrical energy needs.
This is the second renewable energy installation at the store – its gas station is already powered by a small wind turbine. Within the store itself, new energy-efficient refrigeration and lighting was installed to decrease its carbon power demand.
