Chinese Commerce Ministry Echoes Calls For Solar Trade Dialogue

The Chinese government hopes to settle the ongoing conflict over the global solar module trade through ‘dialogue and consultations,’ according to a new statement from a Ministry of Commerce spokesperson.

Last week, German Chancellor Angela Merkel met with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao to discuss Europe's anti-dumping case against China. Merkel called for negotiations among China and Western nations, according to reports.

China's government now appears to agree with this strategy. Shen Danyang, the Ministry of Commerce spokesperson, has urged Germany and other European countries to ‘listen to opinions from all parties and carry out the promise of avoiding any new form of protectionism’ and avoid implementing tariffs on Chinese solar products.

According to Shen, in the current economic climate, the ‘misuse’ of trade measures will prove to be financially harmful.
