Dominion Virginia Power says it has received a $5 million grant from the Virginia Tobacco Commission to fund a 4 MW solar power facility in Halifax County, Va.
‘This grant is the kick-start to what would be the largest solar project in Virginia,’ says Mary C. Dowell, senior vice president of alternative energy solutions at Dominion.
The $35 million integrated solar and energy-storage facility is expected to begin operating in 2012, pending regulatory approvals. The company plans to ask the Virginia State Corporation Commission for approval in 2011.
Dominion will issue a request for proposals for the engineering, procurement and construction of the solar facility, which is anticipated to be located on up to 50 acres of land in Halifax County. The company estimates that it will require about 100 construction jobs to build the solar facility.
