The Dow Chemical Co. has unveiled its line of Dow Powerhouse Solar Shingles, photovoltaic solar panels in the form of solar shingles that can be integrated into rooftops with standard asphalt shingle materials.
The solar shingle systems are expected to be available in limited quantities by mid-2010 and are projected to be widely available in 2011. The product features copper indium gallium deselenide photovoltaic cells in a proprietary roofing shingle design, which represents a multifunctional solar energy-generating roofing product.
According to Dow, the product design reduces installation costs, as the conventional roofing shingles and solar-generating shingles are installed simultaneously by roofing contractors.
