Enel, Sharp Aiming For 161 MW Of Solar PV By 2011

Enel, one of Italy's largest power companies, has formed a strategic partnership with Sharp to propel the photovoltaic sector in Italy, southeastern Europe and the Mediterranean basin.

Enel and Sharp will carry out a detailed analysis for the construction of an Italy-based plant for the manufacture of photovoltaic panels using Sharp's triple-junction thin-film technology. The companies will ultimately develop photovoltaic fields with a total capacity of 161 MWp by the end of 2011.

The Sharp panels manufactured at the new plant will be made available throughout Europe, and subsidiary Enel.si will also distribute the panels – through its franchising network of more than 370 affiliates – to small and medium-sized enterprises and residential users. Part of the output will be used to install photovoltaic fields in other countries in the Mediterranean basin where Enel already has a major presence.
