Infrabel, Enfinity, the municipalities of Brasschaat (together with the intermunicipal financing company FINEA) and Schoten (together with the intermunicipal financing company IKA), and Solar Power Systems have announced the completion of a PV installation on the roof of the HSL4 railway tunnel in Antwerp, Belgium.
The installation, which consists of 16,000 photovoltaic panels, marks the first time that railway infrastructure has been made available for energy production, according to the companies. The energy will be used both for the infrastructure itself and for rail traffic.
The installation is expected to provide an annual electricity production of 3,300 MWh, and approximately 4,000 trains will be able to run entirely on solar energy every year.
