California-based Fenix International, a developer of solar power systems for off-grid communities in Africa, closed $12.6 million in Series B and working capital financing.
This funding round includes investments from GDF Suez, Schneider Electric, Orange France Telecom, cleantech entrepreneurs Tom Dinwoodie and Warner Philips, and other impact investors.
Fenix manufactures and distributes ReadyPay Solar, a mobile solar panel and battery system that provides farmers and other rural residents with affordable access to electrical power. It is intended to serve as a replacement for diesel generators, candles and kerosene lamps. The system operates with a cell-phone based subscription service that charges micro-payments for usage.
