Geronimo Energy Wins Bid To Build Community Solar For St. Paul Public Housing

The St. Paul Public Housing Agency (SPPHA) in Minnesota has selected Geronimo Energy to build a community solar garden under Xcel Energy's Solar*Rewards Community program.

Geronimo Energy's project was selected from a group of competitive proposals received by SPPHA. The project will help offset roughly 90% of SPPHA's electricity usage at 16 high-rise buildings with over 2,500 housing units, as well as for the main office facility in St. Paul, Minn. Over the life of the contract with Geronimo, the SPPHA project is expected to generate approximately 864.4 GWh of electricity.

Under the community solar program, Xcel customers can purchase a subscription to a community solar garden in exchange for a credit on their monthly Xcel bill. The program was approved by the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission in September 2014 and opened up in December.

Community solar legislation in Colorado has recently encouraged SunShare and NRG Energy to establish a partnership to develop and build projects in the state.
