IKEA Installing 869 kW Solar Array On New Kansas Store

IKEA says it is planning a 869.25 kW solar photovoltaic system for the roof of its new retail location in Merriam, Kan.

Pending permits, Chicago-based SoCore Energy will begin installing the 2,850-panel system in June, with completion scheduled for the fall. The 2,000-square-foot solar array is expected to generate approximately 1.348 GWh of electricity annually.

IKEA Merriam will represent the 41st solar project for IKEA in the U.S. The store also will be the company's second U.S. location with a geothermal component to its heating and cooling system.

‘We are excited about furthering our sustainability commitment with solar panels on the future Merriam store,’ says Rob Parsons, IKEA Merriam store manager. ‘As is the case with geothermal, solar energy will reduce greatly the new store's energy needs and carbon footprint.’
