Initiative Would Boost Renewable Electricity Standard In Michigan

0

Rep. Pam Byrnes, D-Lyndon Township, has unveiled legislation designed to increase the usage of renewable energy in Michigan and create jobs in the renewable energy sector in the state.

The initiative would require that 30% of electricity come from renewable energy sources by 2025. Legislation passed last year requires that 10% of Michigan's electricity come from renewable sources by 2015.

The legislation would also require utilities to work with their customers to decrease electricity usage so that utilities sell 2% less energy each year, as well as revise building codes to increase energy efficiency.

Additionally, residents and businesses would be permitted to sell excess energy they create via renewable sources, such as solar installations.

According to Brynes' office, the legislation will position Michigan as a leader in producing alternative energy, as well as manufacturing energy-efficient products and components for renewable energy systems.
