In a 70 to 63 vote Tuesday, the Minnesota House of Representatives passed an omnibus bill that would require the state's investor-owned utilities to procure 4% of their electricity from solar power by 2025.
In addition, H.F.596 includes a ‘Made in Minnesota’ incentive to help spur local sourcing of solar photovoltaic products.
According to a Session Daily report on the House website, bill sponsor Rep. Melissa Hortman, DFL-Brooklyn Park, said Tuesday's vote is"a move toward the future, an important move for Minnesota." Meanwhile, many Republican representatives opposed the bill, claiming the new provisions would cost ratepayers too much.
The legislation now moves to the state Senate.
