Morningstar Corp. has unveiled a string calculator for estimating the proper sizing and configuration of PV modules when used with Morningstar charge controllers. The calculator is now available on the company's Web site at http://www.morningstarcorp.com/strings/calc.php.
A string calculator is a helpful tool for designing an off-grid, battery-based PV system and optimizing a PV module specification to the Morningstar charge controller specification, says Morningstar. Users can select pre-populated module data included on the site or input their own module specifications to calculate the proper string sizing. A warning will appear if a selection is made outside of the system's parameters or an incompatibility occurs between the PV module and the controller.Â
The tool also allows users to adjust design parameters, such as range of expected battery voltages and minimum and maximum expected temperature ranges at the installation site. All of these data are considered in calculating an accurate system sizing.
