The Maryland-based nonprofit Solar Village Project (SVP) has undertaken an electrification project for the village of Kihare Fields in the state of Bihar, India.
SVP plans to provide home lighting and basic electrical systems powered by solar generation systems for every home in Kihare Fields, a small, rural community.
The electricity derived from SVP-installed solar panels is used to power electrical lighting systems. The electricity replaces expensive and dangerous kerosene lighting, which is common in many eastern Indian villages.
Access to electricity also enables the charging of personal technology devices, such as cell phones. Currently, villagers often must walk long distances to charge cell phones.
In summer 2014, SVP successfully completed its first major installation project in the village of Gauterine.
‘The lessons learned from our initial project in the Gauterine village project(cut) will undoubtedly guide us during this second project,’ says Joe Kselman, director of SVP.
