NRG Energy To Acquire Dominion’s Retail Electric Business, Edison Mission Energy Assets

NRG Energy Inc. has agreed to acquire Dominion Resources Inc.'s retail electric business. Dominion currently serves more than 600,000 customer accounts in Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania, and through its Cirro Energy brand in Texas.

The transaction is expected to close by the end of March. NRG says customers should expect a seamless transition and no change in their service.

"We are working to ensure that when the deal closes, the transition of Dominion customers to NRG is smooth and that it paves the way for our special brand of customized electricity plans and access to emerging energy technology solutions," says Jim Steffes, president of NRG Retail Northeast.

NRG Energy also says it has received a green light from a bankruptcy court to acquire Edison Mission Energy's (EME) assets. NRG Energy says EME's wind generation portfolio, combined with NRG's solar portfolio, will make the company the third-largest U.S.-based renewable energy generation company.
