As part of its development strategy for solar energy, Saint-Gobain, a provider of solar energy products and services, plans to acquire Shell's share of Avancis, a joint venture between the two companies.
According to Saint-Gobain, Avancis has developed highly competitive thin-film copper indium gallium deselenide technology to manufacture photovoltaic modules. With an annual capacity of 20 MW, the company's first plant is already operating in Torgau, Germany.
This necessitates expertise in glass coating and in glass thermal treatment, two processes belonging to the core portfolio of Saint-Gobain, the company says. Saint-Gobain intends to accelerate the industrial development of Avancis.
