Sharp Corp. recently announced that its worldwide cumulative solar cell production volume has reached 2 GW. The company has been involved with solar power for nearly 50 years – beginning research into solar cells in 1959 and starting mass production in 1963.

The company initiated mass production of residential solar power generation systems in 1994, marking the start of full-scale sales for household use. In 2005, Sharp began mass production of tandem thin-film solar cells, followed by the manufacture of silicon for solar cells in 2007. And earlier this month, the company announced a collaboration with a production equipment company to develop equipment for manufacturing thin-film solar cells.
