Singulus Technologies, a supplier of equipment and process technology for silicon and thin-film solar cells, has signed a letter of intent with M-Cells, a China-based cell producer.
The companies plan to use Singulus' photovoltaic production machines for the passivation of cells' rear sides with aluminum oxide, including the solution for wet-chemical processes in M-Cells' factory in China. The equipment is expected to improve current cell efficiency offered by M-Cells by up to 1%, according to the companies.
The trend in the solar manufacturing industry toward ever-thinner wafers for crystalline solar cells with higher levels of efficiency requires an improved surface passivation of the cell rear side. Within the crystalline solar market, new passivated emitter and rear-cell technologies are expected to play a role.
