SMA Supplying Japan’s Largest Solar Plant

Germany-based SMA Solar Technology AG says it has been chosen as the sole inverter supplier for Japan's largest solar power plant.

The 70 MW project, operated by Kagoshima Mega Solar Power Corp., will be located in Kagoshima City in southern Japan and is due to be completed by fall 2013. Construction began in September.

SMA will deliver a total of 140 Sunny Central 500CP-JP inverters, which have been customized to meet the requirements of the Japanese market. Even though Japan Electrical Safety & Environment Technology Laboratories certification is not required for utility-scale central inverters, SMA has put the devices through tests similar to the tests performed on inverters in the residential segment, the company notes.
