A Caribbean resort has mixed renewable energy with local talent by introducing a home-made solar-powered ferry.

According to an Associated Press report, the Discovery at Marigot Bay resort in St. Lucia has introduced the 12-foot Sunshine Express, which is powered by photovoltaic panels on its roof. The ferry, which was designed by a local harbor master and built by St. Lucian craftsmen, can carry up to 15 guests from the resort to the popular restaurants and bars around the island.

The ferry is touted as the first of its kind in the St. Lucia. Judith Verity, owner of the Discovery resort, told the Associated Press that she hopes this will be the first in a new fleet of solar-powered boats for the Caribbean.
