Sunetric, previously known as Suntech Hawaii, has completed installation of a 500 kW solar farm at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Kauai. The project by Hawaii Pacific Health Partners Inc. is the first of its kind at a Hawaii hospital and the second-largest solar farm in the state, Sunetric says. During peak sun hours, it supplies 52% of the hospital's electricity needs.
‘The system was installed to reduce and stabilize Wilcox's utility costs so that more dollars could be dedicated to patient care initiatives,’ notes Ray Vara, CEO of operations for Hawaii Pacific Health.
The new farm sits adjacent to the hospital. It consists of 2,190 SunPower solar panels sited on 1.4 acres of land. The project generates 740,000 kWh of power annually – enough to power 85 homes – and will save the hospital more than $250,000 annually.
