U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu and California Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr. are expected to join SunPower and its partner Flextronics in dedicating a new solar panel manufacturing facility in Milpitas, Calif.

The Flextronics plant has created more than 100 jobs and will produce 75 MW per year of solar power panels for rooftops and power plants, according to the companies.

During the dedication event, Brown is expected to sign into law California's expanded renewable portfolio standard (RPS), which will require 33% renewable energy by 2020. The RPS legislation was sponsored by State Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, and passed the legislature last month.
