SunPower Corp. says its technology will be used for solar systems at several U.S. government properties, including the Department of Energy's (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the General Services Administration (GSA), the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force. The company says these contracts are for a total of 20 MW worth of projects and that more than 1,000 local jobs will be created during the construction of these projects.
The recent government contracts won by SunPower include the following:
- SunPower will design and construct a 2 MW system at the DOE's new Research Support Facility at the NREL's campus in Golden, Colo. The project will be installed by Namaste Solar at three sites, including a new ultra-low-energy office complex, an outdoor parking area and a parking garage. This project is being financed through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), and is expected to be complete by the end of 2011.
- The GSA and general contractor Shiel Sexton will use SunPower's T5 Solar Roof Tile system for a 1.8 MW project under construction at the General Emmett Bean Federal Building in Indianapolis. The project is being financed through ARRA and is scheduled for completion in January 2011.
- SunPower will design, build, operate and maintain solar projects ranging from 1 MW to 15 MW for the Navy and Marine Corps in the southwestern U.S. The power from these projects will be sold to the Navy and Marine Corps under power purchase agreements. The Navy will have up to five years to award up to 40 MW of solar projects under this $200 million contract.
