UPS has completed a 250 kW rooftop solar array on its Lakewood, N.J., facility that is expected to provide a significant portion of the building's peak energy needs. The installation is the first in a series of investments planned by UPS to increase the company's reliance on renewable energy.
The solar power system is expected to produce 270,000 kWh of electricity annually, providing nearly 30% of the building's annual energy needs. UPS says it is now assessing other facilities to gauge their suitability for solar installations.
The Lakewood installation was custom-designed and will be owned and operated by UPS. This owner-operator approach saves engineering and construction costs, according to the company.
